Abstract

Background: Caring for a premature baby in the NICU is a challenging and stressful experience for parents and mothers. Limited interaction with babies becomes a significant stress factor. PSS: NICU was explicitly developed to describe the stress that mothers experience in this unique and challenging situation. Objective: To determine the stressful picture of maternal care of premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Research Method: This study employed a descriptive quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample size consisted of 94 mothers of premature babies, selected through purposive sampling. The instrument utilized was the Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS: NICU) questionnaire and descriptive statistics frequencies were employed for statistical analysis. Results: The study showed that the average maternal age was 36.59, with a majority having a high school/vocational education (57.4%). The average maternal gestational age was 30.73 weeks, and the average infant birth weight was 1583.37 grams. Male babies accounted for 52.1% of the sample. The average maternal stress level in caring for premature infants was 98.95. The results indicated that the relationship subscale and parental role were the main sources of maternal stress, with an average value of 29.01 (29%). Conclusion: This study found that relationships and parental changes were the highest sources of stress compared to the baby's appearance and behavior, as well as sights and sounds.
