Abstract

Background, In surgery, there are two types of procedures: major and minor surgery. Anesthesia is used during each surgical procedure, and it can cause various side effects, including shivering during surgeries performed under general or regional anesthesia. Objective, To determine the factors associated with the incidence of shivering in patients undergoing major surgery at the operating theater of RSUD Hj. Anna Lasmanah of Banjarnegara. Method, This study utilized the analytic correlation method within a crosssectional approach. The respondents in this study were 91 patients undergoing major surgery. Results, The majority of patients were female, with 61 respondents (67%). The most common age group was early adulthood (26–35 years), with 25 respondents (27.5%). In terms of body mass index (BMI), the majority fell within the normal category, with 61 respondents (67%). Regional anesthesia was widely used by 53 respondents (56.2%). The duration of the operation mostly fell within the moderate category of 1-2 hours, as reported by 65 respondents (71.4%). The most common room temperature during surgery was 22°C, with 40 respondents (44%). The occurrence of shivering during major surgeries was reported by 42 respondents (46.2%). BMI, duration of the operation, and operating room temperature yielded a p-value of <0.05, indicating significance, while gender, age, and type of anesthesia yielded a p-value of >0.05, indicating no significant association. Conclusion, There was a relationship between BMI, duration of the operation, and operating room temperature and the incidence of shivering in patients undergoing major surgery.
