Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major socio-economic problem that burdens the whole world, and is ranked as the third leading cause of death globally. Research Objectives: To determine the effect of giving isometric handgrip exercise to reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients in the Salma room of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital Research Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with pre and post test designs without control. Sampling used purposive sampling technique and obtained a sample of 43 respondents. Data collection using handgrip and SOP instruments. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis using the Shapiro Wilk test. Research Results: The results of this study before the Isometric Handgrip Exercise therapy, most of the respondents experienced hypertension in the mild category, 28 respondents (65%), while a small number of respondents did not experience hypertension and experienced hypertension in the severe category, namely 0 respondents (0.0%). There is a significant difference or influence between blood pressure before and after the Isometric Handgrip Exercise therapy is proven by obtaining the independent sample t-test value resulting in a sig value. (2-tailed) of 0.013. Conclusion: There is a significant difference or influence between blood pressure before and after Isometric Handgrip Exercise therapy Recommendation: For future researchers, it is hoped that they can examine the relationship between isometric handgrip exercise and blood pressure in hypertensive patients
