Abstract
Background, The main compounds of the composer of the citronella essential oil (Cymbopogon nardus (L.) Rendle.) are citronella and geraniol, which are an antifungal agents. Both are terpenoid groups belonging to monoterpenes that can inhibit the growth of pathogens. The formulation of a perfumed essential oil cream preparation can be described as optimum when the preparation of the cream is stable in the physical evaluation of its versatility, adhesiveness and there are no changes in the homogeneity, color, odor, pH and viscosity of the formula. Therefore, it is necessary to make a creamy fragrance essential oil cream with an optimal formula. Research Objective, This research aims to find out the composition of the optimum formula emulsifiers of citronella essential oil cream with a combination of stearic acid and trietanolamine that does not irritate the skin with the Simplex Lattice Design method. Research Methods, This research uses citronella essential oil with a concentration of 1%. Optimization of the cream formula was carried out using the Simplex Lattice Design method approach with 8 runs. The observed responses are adhesion, spreadability and viscosity. The optimum formula would be tested for homogenity, organoleptic, pH and irritation testing using rabbits. The Result, The results of the study obtained the optimum formula with a comparison of stearic acid and trietanolamine concentration 49% : 6%, the physical evaluation of the cream formula optimum achieved adhesive strength 4,582 seconds; resistance 5,5332 cm and viscosity 3799,8 cPs. The result of the irritation test 0.33 falls into the category of insignificant and safe on the skin. Conclusion, Citronella essential oil can be formulated as a cream preparation that has undergone a physical evaluation of the preparation which does not differ significantly from the predictions of the SLD software, so that the used SLD is already suitable and can determine the optimum formula of the cream and does not irritate the skin. Recommendation, it is necessary to carry out further testing in the form of an antifungal test that can be inhibited by citronella essential oil with a concentration of 1%.
