Abstract
Background: Antioxidants are substances that function to inhibit and neutralize free radicals. Antioxidants can work as filter on the surface of the skin, absorbing or reflecting ultra violet rays so they can protect the skin from sun exposure. The effectiveness of a substance in protecting the skin from ultra violet radiation is indicated by the SPF value. The higher of the antioxidant activity, the higher the SPF value. Phenolic compounds and flavonoids are secondary metabolites that have potential as antioxidants. Belimbing wuluh leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties because they contain phenolics, flavonoids, saponins and steroids. Objective: Determine the content of phenolics and flavonoids as well as determine the antioxidant activity and SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value of ethanol extract of belimbing wuluh leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.). Metods: Determine the total phenolic content, total flavonoids, test the antioxidant activity of the DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl) method and the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value with varying concentrations of 70% ethanol extract of belimbing wuluh leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.). Result: Total phenolic and flavonoid content in the ethanol extract of belimbing wuluh leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) were 95,37 mg GAE/g and 6,91 mg QE/g respectively, the resulting antioxidant activity was very strong with an IC50 value of 21,53 ppm and an SPF value of 30,63 which could protect the skin for 5,11 hours. Conclusion: The ethanol extract of belimbing wuluh leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) is classified as a very strong antioxidant and is able to provide ultra protection against sunlight. Suggestion: Further researchers are advised to test the safety of the extract, carry out the formulation and evaluate the physical quality of sunscreen preparations from the ethanol extract of belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) leaves.
