Abstract

Background: Empathy, characterized by the capacity to perceive and comprehend the thoughts and emotions of others, holds a crucial place in human interactions. For nurses, possessing a high level of empathy during caregiving can significantly enhance the comfort and contentment experienced by recipients of care. Objective: To measure the level of empathy demonstrated by nurses in the context of providing nursing care. Method: This study was a qualitative approach, this research delves into the realm of empathy. The sampling process adopts purposive sampling, while data collection hinges on in-depth interviews. Interview durations for each participant spanned between 10 and 20 minutes. Each participant participated in a single interview, preceding follow-up interviews. Data saturation emerged after the 17th participant, culminating in a sample size of 17 individuals. Results: Within the study, three overarching themes emerged: (1) empathy knowledge of nurses; (2) empathy cognitive capacity of nurses; and (3) empathy affective capability of nurses. Conclusion: The study found that underscores the significance of empathy in nursing care. A substantial majority of participants emphasized that empathy stands as an integral and indispensable element in the provision of nursing care. Recommendation: For forthcoming researchers, it is recommended to explore and adapt methodologies that can plumb the depths of nurses' empathy with greater precision and depth.
