Abstract
Background: Asthma is a prevalent disease affecting many Indonesians. As of the end of 2020, there were approximately 12 million asthmatics in Indonesia, accounting for 4.5% of the total population. One of the nursing issues faced by patients with asthma is ineffective breathing patterns due to narrowed airways, leading to insufficient inhalation and/or exhalation. Consequently, effective airway management becomes crucial for relieving airway obstructions. Objective: This scientific paper aims to provide an overview of nursing care for asthma patients with ineffective breathing patterns. Method: The study adopted a case study approach with three asthma patients in the emergency department as respondents. Guided imagery therapy was administered for three days to address the problem of ineffective breathing patterns in these patients. Results: After three sessions of nursing care involving guided imagery therapy, asthma patients showed an improvement in their breathing patterns, as reflected in a respiratory rate (RR) of ≤ 20 times per minute. Conclusion: By providing guided imagery therapy, nursing care effectively addressed the issue of ineffective breathing patterns, leading to improved breathing and reduced shortness of breath in asthma patients.
