Abstract
Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy that develops in the Rosen Muller nasopharynx and the upper region of the nasopharynx. Chemotherapy is one of the primary treatments for NPC patients. However, this therapy brings about adverse effects, both physically and psychologically. Physical side effects encompass alopecia, reduced appetite, nausea, and vomiting. Psychological repercussions involve depression, anxiety, and stress. Objective: To assess the impact of chemotherapy on nasopharyngeal cancer patients treated at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Method: This study was a descriptive method and cross sectional approach. This study investigated the 45 respondents who selected according to specified criteria, employing a total sampling technique. Results: The findings reveal a male predominance, constituting 64.4% of the respondents. Those aged 41–60 constituted 46.7%, while 40% completed high school education. Entrepreneurs represented 28.9% of the respondents' occupation, and 42.2% had suffered from NPC for less than a year. Around 53.3% underwent the 4th cycle of chemotherapy. The impact of chemotherapy was predominantly moderate in terms of physical condition, with 66.7% falling within this category. Psychological evaluation revealed 35.6% with mild depression, 44.4% at the anxiety level, and 48.9% in the moderate stress category. Conclusion: The research concludes that the impact of chemotherapy primarily manifests as a moderate effect on the physical condition. Psychologically, respondents exhibited varying levels of disturbance, including mild depression, moderate anxiety, and moderate stress. Recommendation: Future researchers are encouraged to delve into the factors influencing both the physical and psychological states of nasopharyngeal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
