Abstract
Background: Middle age is the stage of family development when the last child has left the house or when it is time to retire. One of the health problems in middle age is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes Self Management Education is an element that is used for people with diabetes mellitus who require a level of health status with knowledge. Objective: Describe nursing care at the developmental stage of a middle-aged family with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This research used a descriptive method and was conducted in 5 meetings. The data collection process was carried out using interview techniques, observation, and physical examination. Respondents consisted of 3 families with one family member suffering from diabetes mellitus. Before health education a pretest was carried out and after health education a posttest was carried out. Examination of blood sugar levels was carried out on the day before the health education. Results: After conducting health education about diabetes mellitus and treating diabetes independently at home, there was an increase in knowledge in 3 families. Families become more aware of diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Health education conducted in families can increase family knowledge.
