Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, primarily due to inadequate insulin production by the body. The prevalence of diabetes has been on the rise, with an estimated 537 million individuals expected to be affected by 2021. Diabetes leads to numerous complications, which can arise due to poorly managed blood sugar levels and inadequate self-care practices. Objective: To explore the connection between self-care practices and blood sugar levels among diabetes mellitus outpatients at the Karanggulung Health Center. Method: This study was a quantitative correlation approach with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique utilized total sampling, enrolling 55 respondents. Data collection relied on the SDSCA questionnaire to assess self-care practices and blood sugar level measurements. Results: The study found that the majority of respondents (43.6%) exhibited moderate self-care practices, while a significant number (56.4%) demonstrated good blood sugar level control. The hypothesis testing using the chi-square test resulted in a p-value of 0.003 (α = 0.05), suggesting a meaningful relationship between the variables under investigation. Conclusion: There was a significant relationship exists between self-care practices and blood sugar levels among diabetes mellitus outpatients at the Karanggulung Health Center. Recommendation: Future researchers are encouraged to explore a broader array of factors that could potentially influence self-care practices among individuals with diabetes mellitus, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of this vital aspect of disease management.
