Abstract

Background: Caries in children is often caused by the tendency of children to eat sticky and sweet foods as well as from improper brushing behavior. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between karyogenic food comsumption patterns and brushing habits with the incidence of dental caries in elementary school children aged grades 3-6 at SD Negeri 1 Pagubugan Kulon. Methods: This research adopted a correlational approach with a cross-sectional design. This study involved 61 students in grades 3-6 who were taken by Total Sampling. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and observation sheets. The data were analyzed descriptively and correlationally using the Chi-Square test. Results: The results indicated that 44 (72.1%) respondents had a moderate category of karyogenic food consumption patterns. Furthermore, 40 (65.6%) respondents had a moderate category of tooth brushing habits. Dental caries were observed in 53 (86.9%) respondents, while 8 (13.1%) respondents did not experience dental caries. The statistical tests revealed that the relationship between karyogenic food consumption and dental caries had a p-value of 0.001 (p<0.05), and the relationship between brushing habits and dental caries had a p-value of 0.034 (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is a relationship between the consumption pattern of karyogenic foods and brushing habits with the incidence of dental caries in elementary school-aged children. Recommendation: Future researchers are encouraged to explore other variables such as salivary pH, plaque formation, oral microorganisms, hereditary factors, knowledge levels, and the role of parents in dental health.
