Abstract
Background: The incidence of dementia in Indonesia reached approximately 1.2 million individuals in 2016. This number is anticipated to rise to 2 million by 2030 and potentially double to 4 million by 2050. Dementia represents a stage in which patients experience a decline in intellectual abilities, often accompanied by disruptions in daily activities and sleep patterns, resulting in an overall cognitive decline. Art therapy and music therapy have been recognized as effective interventions for enhancing cognitive, physical, and social functioning in elderly individuals. Objective: The objective of this study is to elucidate the nursing care provided to elderly dementia patients who exhibit nursing problems related to cognitive function disorders. This care incorporates the use of art therapy and music therapy and is administered in Kabuaran Village, Prembun District. Method: This scientific investigation adopts a descriptive case study design. The study focuses on five elderly individuals diagnosed with dementia, all of whom exhibit cognitive dysfunction issues. Data collection methods include various assessments such as tests, interviews, questionnaires, observations, multilevel scales, and documentation. Results: Among the five patients studied, prior to undergoing music therapy and art therapy, the clients displayed mild to moderate intellectual impairment and mild mental function impairment. Following a four-week intervention period consisting of music therapy and art therapy, the results of the MMSE (Mini- Mental State Examination) and SPMSQ (Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire) assessments revealed an improvement of 2-3% in the intellectual and mental functioning of the clients. Conclusion: The innovative approaches of music therapy and art therapy have proven to be effective in addressing cognitive disorders in elderly dementia patients.
