Abstract

Background: Laparotomy is a surgical procedure involving the opening of the abdominal wall through an incision to access and address various abdominal issues, such as cancer, hemorrhage, perforation, or obstruction. Postoperative laparotomy patients often experience pain, leading to anxiety, disrupted sleep patterns, muscle stiffness, a hindrance to the healing process, and discomfort in hemodynamic status. To address this pain, non-pharmacological pain management techniques, such as foot massage therapy and deep breathing relaxation, are recommended. Objective: To present the outcomes of nursing care provided to post-laparotomy patients with acute pain using foot massage therapy and deep breath relaxation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong hospital. Method: This study was a descriptive method with a case study approach and five post-laparotomy patients who got pain recruited as respondents. Results: After six treatment sessions over 48 hours, the study observed a reduction in the pain scale from moderate pain to mild pain among five post-laparotomy patients. Conclusion: The application of foot massage therapy and deep breath relaxation resulted in a decrease in pain scale scores among post-laparotomy patients experiencing acute pain. Therefore, it is recommended that foot massage therapy and deep breath relaxation be considered independent interventions in pain management for postoperative laparotomy patients. These techniques can contribute to improved patient comfort and recovery.
