Abstract

Background: Phlebitis is inflammation of the veins which often occurs due to chemical or mechanical irritation, especially in patients undergoing intravenous therapy such as administering fluids, drugs or nutrition. Symptoms of phlebitis include pain, swelling, redness, and infection can develop. The incidence of inhospital phlebitis is relatively common, with an incidence rate of 10-20% in patients receiving intravenous therapy. This condition can lead to serious complications including infection, sepsis and venous thrombosis, so it is important to recognize the risk factors that contribute to phlebitis. Objective: to determine the factors that influence phlebitis in patients in the adult inpatient ward at RSU PKU Muhammadiyah Kutowinangun Method: This research uses a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The type of instrument in this research is an observation sheet. Data were analyzed descriptively and correlatively. Results: There was a relationship between the location of the vein insertion and the incidence of phlebitis in inpatients at RSU PKU Muhammadiyah Kutowinangun (p=0.022). There was a relationship between the length of time the infusion was in place and the incidence of phlebitis in inpatients at RSU PKU Muhammadiyah Kutowinangun (p=0.009). There was no relationship between the size of the infusion used and the incidence of phlebitis in inpatients at RSU PKU Muhammadiyah Kutowinangun (p=0.715). Recommendation: Future research can expand understanding of factors in the incidence of phlebitis by integrating quantitative and qualitative methods to explore more deeply the experiences of patients and caregivers.
