Abstract

Background: Asthma is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Shortness of breath is the main symptom of asthma which can interfere with sufferers' daily activities. Breathing exercises are a safe and affordable intervention, so they can be an effective therapeutic alternative for reducing shortness of breath in asthma sufferers. Objective: This study aims to find out whether breathing exercises can help reduce shortness of breath in asthma sufferers who receive nebulizer therapy. Method: This research uses a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design approach. The research subjects were asthma patients who received nebulizer therapy at the PKU Muhammadiyah Kutowinangun Hospital. Research subjects were divided into two groups randomly, namely the intervention group and the control group. The intervention group will undergo breathing exercises, while the control group will undergo nebulizer therapy only. Shortness of breath will be assessed using shortness of breath observations before and after the study. Data were analyzed descriptively and comparatively. Results: The results of the study showed that there was a significant change in the breathing condition of asthma patients in the treatment group (p<0.05) where there was an improvement in RR, SpO2, use of respiratory muscles, nostrils, oxygen use, and lung sounds. The results of the study showed that there were only significant changes in RR and use of respiratory muscles after intervention (p<0.00) but there were no significant changes in SpO2, Nostrils, Oxygen Use and Lung Sounds (p>0.05). The results of the study showed that there was an effect of breathing exercise on changes in shortness of breath in asthma patients who received nebulizer therapy, the intervention group experienced a better reduction in signs of shortness of breath than the control group (p<0.05) but there was no reduction in the nostrils in both the control and intervention groups. far apart (p>0.05). Recommendation: It is hoped that health services will use the results of this research as an evidence base for nursing practice. The results of the research can be used as input in determining policies and the basis for preparing standard operating procedures (SOP) for diaphragmatic breathing exercise for asthma patients.
