Abstract
Background: Elderly will go through a degenerative process that results in health issues. One of them is the issue of dependence when performing activities of daily living. In order to increase the elderly's independence in doing their activities of daily living, caregiver support is consequently a crucial component. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between caregiver support and elderly independence in carrying out activities of daily living (ADL) at the nursing home. Method: Cross-sectional study design was utilized in this quantitative research type. A total of 127 elderly living in nursing homes served as the samples for this study by consecutive sampling. While the elderly independence in performing ADLs was assessed using a Barthel index questionnaire, the caregiver support instrument employed a social worker support questionnaire. The Somers' test was then utilized to analyze the data. Results: According to the findings, there were 87 elderly (68.5%) who were 60 to 74 years old, 72 elderly (56.7%) who identified as female, 104 elderly (81.8%) who identified as Shinto, 18 elderly (14.2%) who had never attended school, and 71 elderly (1–10 years) who had resided in a nursing home (55.9%). Additionally, the majority of the elderly, up to 113 elderly (88.9%), received high caregiver support, and the majority of the elderly performed activities of daily living (ADL) in the independent category, with up to 104 elderly (81.9%). Further, the Somers'd test results obtained a sig p-value of 0.000 (p <0.05) and r = 0.991. Conclusion: There is a strong level of closeness and a positive association between caregiver support and the elderly independence in performing activities of daily living (ADL) in the nursing home. In other words, the higher the caregiver support given to the elderly, the more independent the elderly are in carrying out activities of daily living (ADL) at the nursing home.
