Abstract

Background: Laparotomy is a surgical procedure involving the opening or cutting of the abdominal wall, which often results in severe pain. Acute pain management includes the use of distraction and relaxation techniques, such as Mozart music therapy, which can enhance blood circulation, reduce muscle tension, induce relaxation, promote a sense of calmness, and alleviate pain responses. Objective: This study aims to describe nursing care involving the application of music therapy to reduce pain levels in post-operative laparotomy patients experiencing acute pain in the ICU of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: A descriptive case study was conducted, involving five post-operative laparotomy patients experiencing acute pain. Data were collected through pre- and postobservation sheets, which were subsequently analyzed to establish a diagnosis. The intervention implemented was the application of Mozart music therapy. Results: Following the implementation of Mozart music therapy, the results indicated controlled pain levels. This was evidenced by a decrease in pain scale scores, with all five patients initially categorized as having severe pain with a score of 6 on the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). After receiving Mozart music therapy for three sessions of 30 minutes each, their pain levels improved to the moderate pain category, with scores ranging from 3 to 4 on the NRS. Conclusion: This case study demonstrates an improvement in patients' conditions, confirming that pain levels were effectively managed before and after the application of Mozart music therapy. Recommendation: We recommend consistent implementation of this approach to reduce pain levels in post-operative patients experiencing acute pain.
