Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a prevalent chronic disease in Indonesia known to cause various complications, including headaches in the elderly, which can significantly impact their daily activities and overall quality of life. Objective: This study aims to deliver gerontic nursing care by applying warm ginger compress stimulation techniques to the neck area of hypertensive elderly individuals experiencing acute pain in Jabres Village, Sruweng District. Method: This study was a descriptive method with a case study approach, involving five hypertensive elderly participants in Jabres Village, Sruweng District. The intervention provided consisted of warm ginger compress therapy applied to the neck for a duration of 15 minutes. Data were collected using nursing care formats, nursing kits, and standardized operating procedures (SOPs). Results: The primary complaint among the hypertensive elderly participants was acute head and neck pain, leading to the main nursing diagnosis of acute pain associated with hypertension. Nursing interventions included assessing pain levels, monitoring vital signs, and administering warm ginger compress therapy to the neck. The outcomes of this therapy indicated a reduction in pain by 2 scales for clients I, II, and IV, along with a 20 mmHg decrease in systolic blood pressure. Clients III and V experienced a 2-scale reduction in pain and a 30 mmHg decrease in systolic blood pressure. These results suggest that warm ginger compress therapy applied to the neck is effective in alleviating pain and reducing blood pressure in hypertensive elderly individuals experiencing acute pain. Conclusion: Warm ginger compress therapy on the neck can serve as a valuable nonpharmacological intervention to alleviate headaches in hypertensive elderly individuals. Recommendation: To facilitate the implementation of warm ginger compress therapy on the neck, it is advisable to establish standardized operating procedures (SOPs) for this technique, ensuring consistent and effective application in clinical settings.
