Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a circulatory system disorder characterized by elevated blood pressure, with systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg. Elderly individuals with hypertension often experience discomfort, such as mild to moderate pain in the back of the head and neck. To enhance the quality of life for elderly hypertension patients, it is crucial to manage hypertension-related pain. One approach that can be independently undertaken by elderly individuals is progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) in conjunction with the recitation of Surah Ar-Rahman from the Quran. Purpose: To elucidate nursing care involving the application of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) and recitation of Surah Ar-Rahman for hypertensive patients experiencing acute pain while lowering blood pressure. The study was conducted at the elderly patients of Posyandu in Pageralang Village, Kemranjen District, Banyumas Regency. Methods: This study was descriptive methods, specifically a case study approach, to explore nursing care for hypertensive patients experiencing acute pain and assess the outcomes after implementing Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) and recitation of Surah Ar-Rahman. Results: After assessing five respondents, it was observed that all of them reported experiencing pain in the back of their heads on a moderate pain scale (4-6). Following three sessions of therapy involving Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) and recitation of Surah Ar-Rahman, the respondents, as a whole, reported feeling more comfortable and freer from pain. Conclusion: The results of nursing care for these five patients suggest that therapy involving progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and recitation of Surah Ar-Rahman is effective in reducing acute pain and lowering blood pressure. Recommendation: Future researchers are encouraged to explore the provision of back massages for elderly hypertension patients experiencing acute pain as part of nursing care.
