Abstract
Background : Most surgical patients feel anxiety as they perceive the operation to be frightening. Anxiety is a subjective experience that cannot be directly observed and is an emotional state without a specific subject. To reduce patient anxiety, therapeutic communication and deep breathing relaxation are applied before surgery. Purpose : This study aims to assess the impact of therapeutic communication and deep breathing relaxation on preoperative anxiety in patients at Amanah Umat Purworejo Hospital. Methods : The quasi-experimental method was employed with 58 respondents divided into intervention groups (deep breathing relaxation) and control groups (therapeutic communication). Results : Statistical analysis results indicate that both interventions effectively reduce patient anxiety (p-value = 0.000). The reduction in anxiety scores is more significant in the deep breathing relaxation group (21.52) compared to the control group (16.79). Conclusion : Deep breathing relaxation and therapeutic communication are effective in reducing preoperative anxiety levels in patients at Amanah Umat Purworejo Hospital. Recommendation : The implementation of therapeutic communication and deep breathing relaxation by nurses aims to alleviate patient anxiety before surgery. Therapeutic communication provides knowledge about the surgical procedure, while deep breathing relaxation enhances oxygen supply and fosters a sense of relaxation in patients.
