Abstract

Background: Oral mucositis is a side effect due to external radiation in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer that affects the quality of life and the effectiveness of cancer therapy. The cytotoxic effect of external radiation results in the formation of excessive free radicals resulting in damage to the DNA of oral mucosal epithelial cells. Sanbe Pure Honey and NaCl 0.9% are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents that can prevent oral mucosal damage. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of oral hygiene using pure honey and NaCl 0.9% Sanbe against oral mucositis in Nasopharyngeal cancer patients with external radiation in the radiotherapy installation of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong hospital. Methods: Quantitative research using Two Group Pretest Posttest design on 30 nasopharyngeal cancer patients who met the inclusion criteria and divided into two groups. In the oral hygiene treatment group using pure honey as many as 15 patients and 15 patients treated using NaCl 0.9% Sanbe. Results: In the pure honey treatment group there was a significant decrease in oral mucositis grade (p=0.000). The average decrease before and after pure honey treatment was 1 grade. in the NaCl 0.9% Sanbe treatment group there was a significant decrease in oral mucositis grade (p=0.008). The average decrease before and after 0.9% Sanbe NaCl treatment is 1 grade. Conclusion: The decrease in oral mucositis grade in the pure honey treatment group was 0.40 higher than the NaCl 0.9% treatment group (p=0.018) so that pure honey is more effective in reducing oral mucositis grade compared to Nacl 0.9% Sanbe treatment. Recommendation: Research the specific mechanism of action of honey that contributes to the healing of oral mucositis.
