Abstract
Background: According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health (2020), hypertension or high blood pressure was defined as an increase in systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and diastolic ≥ 90 mmHg. Hypertension was caused by genetic factors, age, stress, obesity, and unhealthy lifestyles. A common problem felt by people with hypertension was usually headaches. There were 2 techniques to reduce the pain scale in hypertensive patients, one of which was by using non-pharmacological techniques by applying slow stroke back massage therapy to reduce the pain scale. SSBM therapy would activate the parasympathetic nervous system and endorphins. This process allowed vasodilation to occur which helped in the development of blood vessels and facilitated better blood circulation to the brain thereby restricting the pain-stimulus path. Purpose: To describe nursing care with the main problem of acute pain in hypertensive patients in the village beside Purworejo. Research Method: This scientific paper used a descriptive method with a case report approach. Data were obtained through interviews, observation, measurement, and documentation. Three patients were diagnosed with hypertension by applying slow stroke back massage therapy and then observed using a numeric rating scale pain assessment. Results: After nonpharmacological therapy, slow stroke back massage for three consecutive days, morning and evening, the pain scale in the three patients decreased, and other complaints were reduced. Conclusion: Nonpharmacological therapy, slow stroke back massage, was effective for reducing the pain scale in hypertensive patients.
