Abstract

Background: Elderly people undergoing treatment in hospital experience weakness in their limbs which causes changes and a decrease in their physical and psychological life functions so that they need help from other people in their daily activities. Therefore, one of the family members as the patient's closest unit will play a role in caring for the elderly by helping to meet the needs of elderly patients. This condition can cause stress in elderly families. Objective: This study aims to determine the stress level of families caring for elderly people with chronic illnesses at RSU Siaga Medika Banyumas. Method: This research is a type of quantitative research using a descriptive study design. A sample of 100 families caring for the elderly was taken using accidental sampling technique. Data was collected using a stress level questionnaire modified for the needs of the research itself. Univariate data analysis using SPSS. Results: Characteristics of families caring for elderly people with chronic diseases at Crysan C room RSU Siaga Medika Banyumas, most of them are adults (26-44 years) (67%), female (75%), work as laborers/farmers (55%), have at least some education junior high school (50%) and caring for the elderly for >12 months (63%). The most common type of chronic disease in the elderly is stroke (33%). The stress level of families caring for elderly people with chronic illnesses at Crysan C Room RSU Siaga Medika Banyumas mostly experiences moderate stress (87%). Conclusion: Most families who care for elderly people with chronic diseases at RSU Siaga Medika Banyumas experience moderate levels of stress. Recommendation: The research results can be used as reference material for further research related to stress management for families caring for the elderly
