Abstract
Background: Dental caries is one of the most common oral health problem experienced by children in Indonesia. The number of dental caries cases in children can be influenced by several factor, one of the most common in school children is the consumption of cariogenic foods. Objective: The objective of this study was to relationship between dental caries in elementary school children and cariogenic food consumption habit. Methods: The research adopted a quantitative analytics research with a cross-sectional design on 62 respondents, which was taken with probability simple random sampling technique, the instrument used was respondent characteristics questionnaire, food frequency questionnaire, and dental caries observation. Result: The research results showed that of the 62 respondents, 53 of them experienced dental caries and 9 others did not. Most children consume high cariogenic foods, and the types of food most frequently consumed are candy, milk and biscuits. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that there was a relationship between the consumption of cariogenic foods and the incidence of dental caries in elementary school children at SD Negeri 1 Bantarwuni with the chi square p value (0.00). Recommendation: Future researchers are expected to be able to examine the contents of cariogenic foods that have a high frequency of consumption such as candy, milk and biscuits which cause dental caries.
