Abstract
Background: The elderly are people aged 60 years and over which includes early elderly (65-74 years), middle elderly (75-84 years), late elderly (85-99 years), and elite elderly (≥ 100 years), in Indonesia the elderly reached 13.48 thousand inhabitants with predominantly elderly women, in Central Java there were 12.71 elderly people. One of the problems in the elderly is changes in memory (dementia). In this case dementia can be minimized with puzzle therapy. Puzzle therapy is used to slow the onset of cognitive decline in the elderly to reduce the level of dependence in the elderly, which has a percentage of 22% of elderly with mild dependence. Objective: Describing nursing care for families in the developmental stage of old age with a decrease in family coping carried out crossword puzzle therapy. Method: This studied used a descriptive method used a case studied method approached that described certain situations in patients. The data collection method in this studied used MMSE with Crossword puzzle therapy intervention in three assisted families. Result: After giving crossword puzzle therapy intervention, it was found that the MMSE score increased. The results of the pre-test value of the 3rd client of the 1st meeting with an average value of 16.6, after 5 meetings the average post-test value is 26. Recommendation: Crossword puzzle therapy can be used to prevent and reduce the level of dementia in the elderly.
