Abstract

Background: Diarrhea can cause changes in bowel movement frequency, intestinal noise, and fecal consistency. Diarrhea can result in fluid deficiency in children, leading to a decrease in fluid levels in the body or dehydration. One treatment for childhood diarrhea is the giving honey, as the flavonoid content in honey can act as an antibacterial agent in the digestive tract. This can reduce bowel movement frequency, improve fecal consistency, and reduce intestinal noise in children. Objective: To provide nursing care for children with gastrointestinal motility dysfunction issues using honey therapy. Also, to observe the decrease in bowel movement frequency, reduction in intestinal noise, and changes in fecal consistency. Method: This research utilized a descriptive method through a case study approach. The research respondents consisted of three pediatric diarrhea patients. Honey was administered to the children at a dosage of 1cc/kg body weight. The instruments used included assessment forms, a thermometer, oximetry, honey, SOP for honey administration in pediatric diarrhea, and observation sheets. Results: After implementing the treatment for three days, it was found that besides the main nursing issue of gastrointestinal motility dysfunction, there were other nursing problems including hyperthermia, acute pain, and nausea. The nursing intervention provided was honey administration. Upon evaluation, the primary outcome showed improvements with a decrease in average bowel movement frequency from 4.7 times per day to 2.6 times per day, consistency of stools changing from an average type 6 to type 5, and bowel sounds decreasing from an average of 38.2 times per day to 37.2 times per day. Conclussion: It is hoped that future researchers can investigate the use of honey in children for treating asthma, nausea, and vomiting.
