Abstract
Background : COPD is a noncommunicable disease affecting the respiratory tract. It can be identified by irreversible respiratory abnormalities which cause persistent respiratory symptoms. Breathing exercises are important in the rehabilitation of COPD because they contribute to a number of physiological and psychological effects, including reducing symptoms such as shortness of breath, increasing lung capacity, and maintaining gas balance. Objective: Determine the effectiveness of breathing exercises to reduce shortness of breath symptoms in COPD patients. Methods : The Quasi Experiment method is used in this study, with a pretest-posttest design and control groups. PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital administered 71 respondents and a sample of 30 respondents for road injuries. The research instruments include a COPD Assessment Test (CAT) questionnaire and data analysis using paired t-test sample test. Research results: This study found that Breathing Exercise reduced moderate symptom category (73.3%) and mild symptom category (60%) with a p-value of 0.000. Conclusion: There is an influence of Breathing Exercise on the symptoms of COPD patients. Recommendations : It is hoped that further research can develop by adding more samples and longer intervention times.
