Abstract

Background: preschool-age children are in the golden period of rapid development. If there is a mismatch in the child's development, then it can become a problem that disrupts the child's life. One of the behavioural problems that commonly occurs in children is temper tantrum. Temper tantrums are outbursts of anger, a sign of a child's inability to control emotions. Around 10% of 4-year-olds experience temper tantrums at least once a day and in preschool age temper tantrums occur equally. Objective: the study aimed to determine the correlation between parenting style and temper tantrum behaviour in preschool children at kindergarten in Sumpiuh Village. Methods: this research uses a correlation analytic method. The sample consisted of 86 respondents using accidental sampling technique. Measurement of parenting style used Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire-Short Version (PSDQ) and temper tantrum behaviour used Temper Tantrum Questionnaire. The data were analysed using the Spearman Rho bivariate test. Results: the results of this study showed that most of parents applied democratic parenting style (84.9%) and most of the preschool children had temper tantrums in the low category (67.4%). The Spearman test results of parenting patterns with temper tantrum behaviour obtained a p value = 0.014. Conclusion: there is a significant correlation between parenting style and temper tantrum behaviour of preschool children in kindergarten at Sumpiuh Village. Recommendation: further researchers are expected to conduct research on the role of fathers in children's emotional development.
