Abstract
Background: Human skin has a natural sun protection system of stratum corneum and pigmentation but this protection cannot protect the skin completely from sun exposure. Bay leaves have sunscreen potential containing alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, terpenoid and tannin compounds. Objective: To develop the potential of bay leaves (Syzygium Polyanthum (Wight.) Walp)) in cream dosage form as a sunscreen activity that meets the quality requirements of the preparation. Research Methods: This study used bay leaves (Syzygium Polyanthum (Wight.) Walp) extracted by maceration of 96% ethanol solvent. standardized with 2 parameters, namely with specific and non-specific. The extract was made a cream preparation with varying concentrations of triethanolmin and stearic acid. Evaluation of the preparation included organoleptical test, homogeneity test, pH test, spreadability test, adhesion test, cream type test, irtation test, stability test and finally SPF value determination test using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Results: the extracts made meet the standardization of specific and non-specific extracts. The extract contains flavonoids with the tube test of the cream preparation meeting the physical quality parameters of the preparation and is not irritating. The preparation has sunscreen activity with SPF value of formula 1 1.07 (low protection), formula 2 SPF value 2.47 (minimal protection), and formula 3 SPF value 5.38 (moderate protection). Conclusion: Sunscreen cream preparations of bay leaf extract (Syzygium Polyanthum (Wight.) Walp)) meets the requirements of good quality. Sunscreen cream from bay leaf extract (Syzygium Polyanthum (Wight.) Walp)) can not cause irritation pacth test method, the best formula SPF activity is formula 3 with SPF value 5.38 (medium protection). Recommendation: for further research to make preparations with a higher concentration of bay leaf extract (Syzygium Polyanthum (Wight.) Walp)) so that the SPF value is even better.
