Abstract
Background: Teki grass tuber (Cyperus rotundus L.) is a plant that has high antioxidant activity so that it can be used as an alternative sunscreen by protecting the skin from UV exposure. Teapot grass tubers contain flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenoids, steroids and saponins. Compounds that have potential as sunscreens are terpenoids. Objective: Identifying the sunscreen activity of the n- hexane fraction of teki grass bulbs with the parameters of SPF value, erythema transmission value (%Te) and pigmentation (%Tp). Metods: Extraction of teki grass tubers using maceration then fractionated using n-hexane which is then tested for tubes and total terpenoid content. The sunscreen activity test was carried out using a UV-Vis spectrovotometer in the SPF test, erythema transmission and pigmentation transmission then analysed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS One Way Anova test. Result: The sunscreen activity of the fraction at a concentration of 200 ppm with an SPF value of 8.98 is classified as maximum protection with the supporting parameters of the %Te value of 12.06% and %Tp 44.56% classified as extra suntan, which can absorb UV B rays in preventing erythema in normal skin and absorb most UV A rays minimally which has the potential to prevent damage to skin pigments and there are differences in significance in the SPPS test. Conclusion: N-hexane fraction of teki grass tuber (Cyperus rotundus L.) has sunscreen activity by recognising the SPF value, %Te and %Tp values. The n-hexan fraction that has potential as a sunscreen at a concentration of 200 ppm. Suggestion: More research needs to be done by adding the amount of fraction concentration and making it into a sunscreen preparation.
