Abstract

Background: Breast cancer patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy tend to have anxiety problems that can reduce quality of life. Spiritual Guided Imagery (SGI) is an effective stress-reducing psychotherapy option. Objective: To analyze nursing care for breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with anxiety problems through providing psychotherapy (spiritual guided imagery) in chemotherapy room of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study used descriptive method with case study approach. The subjects were 5 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with anxiety. The instruments were a nursing care format, Nursing Kit, and SOP for innovative spiritual guided imagery interventions. The researchers provided spiritual guided imagery therapy twice a day, in the morning and evening, for two face-to-face sessions per day. The data were analyzed descriptively using nursing care. Results: The results showed decrease of anxiety symptoms and increase of anxiety management skills before and after Guided Imagery treatment. The highest decrease of anxiety levels was at Patient II and Patient V, which was 5 HADS scores each after Guided Imagery treatment. Two patients (Patient II and Patient V) showed improvement from Severe Case to Moderate Case. This suggests that this therapy has the potential to help patients with severe anxiety. All patients were able to accept and practice Guided Imagery well from the first day of implementation. Age, level of education, and positive attitude and openness to new methods contribute to the success of this case study. Conclusion: The innovation of spiritual guided imagery intervention can be an alternative nursing intervention in reducing anxiety levels of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Recommendation: It is necessary to create standard SOPs for the innovation of spiritual guided imagery intervention to guarantee the safety and effectiveness of implementing innovations in nursing care.
