Abstract

Background Labor pain is an unpleasant sensation during childbirth, starting in the latent and active phases of stage I labor. In the active phase, the cervix opens from 3 to 10 cm due to uterine contractions and cervical dilation. Effleurage massage increases oxytocin and endorphin production, stimulates uterine contractions, accelerates labor, reduces the risk of hypoxia in the baby, lowers stress hormones, enhances physiological functions, induces relaxation, reduces pain and anxiety, and decreases the intensity of uterine contractions. Objective To explain the nursing care approach that includes the use of effleurage massage technique to reduce pain levels during the first stage of labor in the VK room at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Hospital, Purwokerto. Methods This study involved five in-labor stage I patients in the VK room at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Hospital, Purwokerto. The main focus was to analyze changes in labor pain levels before and after effleurage massage. Nursing Care Outcomes All respondents showed a relaxed response, controlled pain, tolerable pain, or reduced pain complaints after receiving the effleurage massage intervention. Although the overall pain scale for all clients remained the same as before the intervention, the effleurage massage provided a distraction from the pain, making the clients appear more relaxed. Conclusion Effleurage massage therapy has been proven to distract from pain during contractions and increase comfort in stage I labor patients.
