Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death and remains prevalent in Indonesia. Chemotherapy is currently a treatment option for breast cancer with side effects such as nausea and vomiting. Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting can be prevented with antiemetic therapy. Irrational use of antiemetics can reduce the quality of life for patients. Objective: This study aims to describe the use of antiemetics and evaluate the rationality of their use in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital in 2023. Methods: This study used a retrospective non-experimental descriptive method with total sampling. Drug data obtained were compared with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN): Guideline on Antiemetics 2023. Result: The study found that the antiemetics used in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital in 2023 were a combination of ondansetron, dexamethasone, ranitidine, and diphenhydramine (100.00%). Evaluation results showed appropriate indication criteria (100.00%), appropriate drug selection (100.00%), appropriate dose (75.37%), appropriate route of administration (100.00%), and appropriate dosing interval (100.00%). Conclusion: The use of antiemetics for breast cancer treatment undergoing chemotherapy at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital in 2023 is still not rational when considering the doses of medication used. Recommendation: For future research, it is recommended to evaluate patient compliance and response to nausea and vomiting in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
