Abstract
Background: The most risky behavior of most adolescents in developing countries is smoking. Based on the previous studies, there are 10 of 12 students started to smoking since they are in the age of 12 to 15 years old.Though there are no-smoking rules and punishment for students breaking the rules, there are still many students get problem to control their self not to smoke. Objective: To determine the correlation between self-control and smoking intention of the XI grade male students in Maarif Vocational High School 4 Kebumen. Method: This minithesis is a descriptive correlation study. The measurement used was Likert’s scale (self control and smoking intention) and the statistics test was Kendall’s Tau correlation analysis techniques. Result: 70% of the students are in the category of enough self control, 69% of the students have strong smoking intention. The result of The Kendall’s Tau statistic analysis shows p value= 0,049 (p<0,050) and it also shows r= 0,171. The results of the analysis indicate that there is a correlation between self control and smoking intention. Conclusion: There is a the correlation between self-control and smoking intention of XI grade male students in Maarif Vocational High School 4 Kebumen and the closeness of correlation is very weak. Recommendation: It is very importance for adolescents to improve self control in order to avoid the negative effects of their environment.
