Abstract
Background :Caring for sick children is a challenging experience. Parents have a greatresposibility to do the best for their children. The social support of a nurse in terms of communication between nurses and parents becomes an important point in the treatment. Nurse social support will greatly help the patient’s family to make positive adjustments or coping behaviors. Parental understanding of the complexity of the diagnosis and the condition of the child can be a coping mechanism in reducing anxiety. Based on the previous study of Dr. Soedirman Hospital in Kebumen on 5 families of thalassemia patients,there were 3 persons (60%) expressed social support in the form of motivation, 2 persons (40%) expressed social support in the form of information. The fifth family coping mechanism (100%) mentions more resignation to the condition of their children. Objective:To know the relationship between social support of a nurse andcoping mechanism of the family of Thalassemia patients in Melati ward in Dr. Soedirman Hospital of Kebumen. Metode: This study uses correlational method with cross sectional approach. The sample is 50 families of Thalassemia patients taken by total sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive and the correlative analysis was done by using Kendal Tau test. Result:Most of respondents (72.0%) in Melati ward of Dr. Soedirman Hospital in Kebumen have good nurse social support. Most respondents (54.0%) in Melati ward of Dr.Soedirman Hospital in Kebumen havea good category of coping mechanism. Conclusion: There is a relationship between nurse social support and the coping mechanism of fmily of Thalassemia patients in Melati ward ofDr. Soedirman Hospital in Kebumen with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0,490 having p=0,000 (<0,05)
