Abstract

Background: Elderly are a vulnerable group that is always dependent and burdensome for families, communities and countries. The fact that the life expectancy of the Indonesian population has improvement every year, it is predicted that the number of elderly in Indonesia will increase every year. In elderly age, someone will usually feel loss of muscle tissue, nerves, and other tissues so that the body will gradually die. From the physical-biological aspects there are changes in some systems, one of them is musculoskeletal system with pain. Pain management methods include pharmacological therapy and non pharmacological therapy. One of the self nursing cares is to give a warm ginger water immersion. The phenomenon that the authors encounter was non pharmacological pain handling with warm ginger water immersion has not been implemented effectively. Purpose: Analyzing gerontic nursing on chronic pain problems from rheumatoid arthritis patients in Kuripan village of Cilacap Regency through overall and comprehensive nursing process. Findings: Based on the analysis on 5 patients, it got data of long duration of lower extremity pain, so the most priority nursing problem is chronic pain related to biological injury agent. Interventions and implementations have been done to assess the characteristics of pain comprehensively, observing non-verbal responses for discomfort, giving warm ginger water immersion, explaining medication use only if necessary. Evaluation of five patients after applying warm ginger water immersion for three days was found that there is decreasing patient's pain scale. Conclusion: A warm ginger water immersion may be used as a non-pharmacological therapy in reducing chronic pain problems for rheumatoid arthritis patients.
