Abstract
Background: The condition of family with a child's mental retardation may affect his or her family's self-concept. Self-concept that involves self-concept, self-ideal, self-esteem, role, and indentity can be positive or negative. Objective: Knowing the self-concept images of mothers who have mentally retardasi children in the extraordinary school of Putra Manunggal Gombong. Method: This research uses quantitative descriptive method. The sample in this research is 53 mothers taken in total sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive. Results: This study found that respondent characteristics based on mother age with mental retardation > 35 years old number 43 (81.8%) and Occupation majority of housewife 35 (66.0%). Self-concept mother who have child mental retardation with self image of majority category good 40 person (75.5%). Mothers who have children mental retardation with the ideal self majority category good 53 (100%). Mothers who have children mental retardation with good esteem 36 (67.9%). Mothers who have mentalnya retardasi children with good majority category self rolex 43 (81.1%). Mothers who have mentalnya retrded children with good majority category indentity 50 (94.3%). The self-concept of mother who hasil a child of mental retardation at the Putra Manunggal Gombong Extraordinary School in the good majority category 51 people (96.2%). Recommendations: The results of this study are recommended as baseline or data about self-concept of parents who have children with specialized needs.
