Abstract
Background: Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) as many as 581 infants are caused by tetanus neonatorum, sepsis, and infection causing neonatal mortality, such as umbilical cord infection. The long duration of umbilical cord release may cause infection. This may be caused by the way how to care for it. There are many ways how to release the umbilical cord – including modern treatments using anti-septic materials, such as sterile gauze, 70% alcoholic gauze, and open treatment using dry and clean principles. Open treatment of umbilical cord effectively can accelerate the release of the umbilical cord. Therefore, the writer is interested in applying open umbilical cord care for newborn baby to accelerate the releasing process of umbilical cord. Objective: To know the duration of umbilical cord release of newborn baby. Method: This research is an analytical descriptive with a case study approach. The samples are 5 healthy newborn babies with the weight more than 2500 grams. Result: After applying umbilical cord care using open method, there was a different duration in releasing the umbilical cord, i.e. 3 babies (60%) in 4 days, 1 baby (20%) in 3 days, and 1 baby (20%) in 5 days. The release of the umbilical cord was categorized into fast (4 babies or 80%) – less than 5 days removal of umbilical cord and average (1 baby or 20%) – in 5 days.
