Abstract

Background: Advances in modern technology, especially social media, have changed the way individuals communicate and interact. Instagram has become one of the most popular social media platforms, with dominant users from the late teens or university students. Social media use offers various benefits, but also brings negative impacts, including decreased self-esteem due to social comparison and negative comments. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between the intensity of Instagram social media use and the level of self-esteem in undergraduate nursing students at Muhammadiyah Gombong University. Methods: The study was conducted on December 27, 2024 using quantitative methods with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 212 nursing students in semester 3, 5, and 7 who were selected based on the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents were 20-21 years old (65.6%), with the dominance of female respondents (61.8%). Instagram usage intensity in the high category was found in 47.6% of respondents, while high self-esteem levels were found in 53.3% of respondents. Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between the intensity of Instagram use and the level of self-esteem (p-value = 0.007). Respondents with high Instagram usage intensity tend to have lower self-esteem levels. Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between the intensity of Instagram use and the level of self-esteem of college students. High Instagram usage tends to correlate with lower self-esteem levels. Recommendation: Consider other variables that affect self-esteem, such as family environment, socioeconomic status, or other psychological conditions.
