Abstract
Background, Clove flower essential oil has high antibacterial activity due to its eugenol content, making it a potential ingredient in mouthwash to treat dental and oral problems. Research Objestives, Determining the optimal formula for clove flower essential oil mouthwash and identifying the characteristics of the preparation. Research Methode, Formula optimization using the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method with variations in glycerin, Tween 80, and cinnamon essential oil on viscosity, pH, freshness, odor, sweetness, spiciness, and bitterness responses. The optimal formula was validated using a T-test. Characterization includes organoleptic properties, foam height, foam stability, clarity, centrifugation stability, and physical stability. Research Result, The optimization results showed the optimum formula with a composition of 1% glycerin, 13.2% Tween 80, and 0.08% cinnamon essential oil. This formula produces a viscosity of 6.41±0.030; pH 6.11±0.041; freshness 2.07±0.075; odor 3.55±0.061; sweetness 4.45±0.1; spiciness 3.49±0.041; and bitterness 4.29±0.065 with a desirability value of 0.714. The One Sample T-test showed all responses p>0.05, meaning the experimental results were not significantly different from the SLD predictions. Characterization of the optimal formula resulted in a liquid mouthwash, clear yellow in color, with a distinctive clove aroma, foam height of 1.32±0.41, foam stability of 70±11.31, clear, no separation, and physically stable. Conclusion, The optimization results of 1% glycerin, 13.2% Tween 80, and 0.08% cinnamon essential oil can produce a clove essential oil mouthwash preparation that meets quality requirements. Rekomendation, For further researches is needed to test antibacterial activity, irritation, toxicity, and plaque index.
