Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that often presents without symptoms but can lead to serious complications. Aromatherapy is an effective non-pharmacological alternative to reduce blood pressure through its relaxation effects. Essential oils of Kaempferia galanga (kencur), Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass), and Citrus limon (lemon) contain vasorelaxant compounds, reduce stress, and promote calmness. The combination of these three has synergistic potential but has not yet been formulated in the form of aromatherapy candles. Objective: To formulate and evaluate the effectiveness of aromatherapy candles combining essential oils of kencur, lemongrass, and lemon in providing relaxation for individuals with hypertension. Methods: This experimental study used a pretest-posttest control group design with 10 respondents per formulation. Evaluation included physical properties testing of the candles and effectiveness testing conducted over a 30-minute session. Data analysis was performed using paired t-test with SPSS software. Results: The melting point and burning time tests met the required standards, indicated by p > 0.05. The essential oil combination showed relaxation effectiveness, as evidenced by a significant decrease in blood pressure after therapy (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Aromatherapy candles containing kencur, lemongrass, and lemon essential oils were proven effective in providing relaxation in hypertensive patients. Suggestion: Future studies should include a larger number of respondents, be conducted over multiple days, and use a negative control group to obtain more representative, accurate, and objective results.
