Abstract
Background: Free radicals are the main cause of various degenerative diseases. One way to inhibit their effects is through antioxidants. Beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) is known to be rich in bioactive compounds that have the potential to act as natural antioxidants. Antioxidant activity can be tested using the β-carotene linoleic acid method. Objective: To determine the antioxidant activity of 96% ethanol extract of beetroot using the β-carotene linoleic acid method and to establish the IC50 value. Method: Phytochemical screening was carried out using test tube methods. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the β-carotene linoleic acid method. The resulting data was expressed as IC₅₀ values. Results: Phytochemical screening revealed that the extract contains flavonoids, phenols, tannins, and alkaloids. The antioxidant activity test of the beetroot extract showed an IC50 value of 30.02 ppm, which falls into the category of very strong antioxidants. Conclusion: The beetroot extract (Beta vulgaris L.) exhibits very strong antioxidant activity based on the IC50 value, indicating its potential to be developed as a natural antioxidant agent. Recommendation: It is suggested that further research conduct purification of the beetroot extract (Beta vulgaris L.) to obtain pure compounds with potential antioxidant properties.
