Abstract

Background: Hospitalization is a condition in which an individual needs to stay in the hospital for therapeutic and medical purposes. Anxiety is a feeling of discomfort, worry, and tension experienced by individuals when facing uncontrollable situations. Parental adaptation refers to the process of adjustment parents undergo in response to environmental changes that affect them psychologically and socially, resulting in either adaptive or maladaptive behaviors. Objective: To describe the anxiety levels and adaptation of parents regarding their children’s hospitalization at Wijayakusuma General Hospital, Kebumen. Method: This research used a descriptive quantitative design. The population consisted of parents of pediatric patients hospitalized at Wijayakusuma General Hospital, Kebumen, from February to March 2025. The sample included 145 respondents, determined using the Slovin formula with a simple random sampling technique. Results: The anxiety level of parents toward their children’s hospitalization showed that most respondents (43 or 30%) experienced moderate anxiety. In terms of adaptation, 75 respondents (52%) were found to have maladaptive levels of adaptation. Conclusion: The majority of parents experienced moderate levels of anxiety, and most showed maladaptive adaptation to their children’s hospitalization at Wijayakusuma General Hospital, Kebumen. Recommendations for Wijayakusuma Hospital, Kebumen: It is expected to create policies, programs, or procedures for handling anxiety in parents who are facing their child's hospitalization.
