Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke; however, limited patient knowledge regarding stroke prevention remains a significant barrier to effective risk control. This condition highlights the need for appropriate and targeted health education. Health education plays a crucial role in improving patients’ understanding of stroke prevention through blood pressure control and the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors. Well-structured educational interventions can enhance awareness, improve the ability to recognize stroke risk factors, and encourage preventive behaviors, thereby increasing stroke prevention knowledge among patients with hypertension. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of stroke prevention education on the level of knowledge among patients with hypertension at the Petanahan Primary Health Center. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest format. A total of 51 respondents were selected through purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of stroke prevention education delivered to patients with hypertension. Data on stroke prevention knowledge were collected using a structured questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: Prior to the educational intervention, the majority of respondents (54.9%) were classified as having a low level of knowledge regarding stroke prevention. Following the intervention, a significant improvement was observed, with 56.9% of respondents reaching the good knowledge category. The Wilcoxon test results showed a statistically significant difference in knowledge levels before and after the intervention (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Stroke prevention education has a significant effect on improving the knowledge level of patients with hypertension at the Petanahan Primary Health Center. Recommendation: It is recommended that stroke prevention education for patients with hypertension be implemented on a continuous basis and further developed using various educational media, such as educational videos or digital modules, to facilitate understanding and promote effective stroke prevention practices.
