Abstract

Background: Melena is condition wherein black stool due to bleeding of upper gastrointestinal duct due to rupture of esophageal varices and erosive gastritis. It may result from eating spicy food and consuming “jamu” a tonic made of medicinal herb to reduce pain. Usually the melena’s patient has deficient knowledge regarding her case. Health education was given to solve this problem. Objective: to provide a nursing care overview on fulfilling learning need to Mrs. K in Barokah ward PKU Muhammadiyah hospital of Gombong Disscussion: assesment has been held on Thusday June 9th, 2016. The patient and her family did not know about the melena disease, it was the first time for her to visit the hospital. The main nursing diagnosis was deficient knowledge. Interventions and Implementations were assessing her knowledge about the disease, giving health education about melena, and reviewing the knowledge acquired. Results: the evaluation done on the third day showed that the patient and her family has known about melena disease. She understood signs and symptoms of the case, and how to choose healthy foods and avoid unhealthy food, and to prevent melena disease. Conclusion: Health education can increase knowledge of the patient and her family for prevention and behavior changes.
