Abstract

Background: Asthma is characterized by inflammation, increased responsiveness to various stimuli, and airway obstruction that can reappear spontaneously or require appropriate treatment. Asthma in Indonesia is included in the list of leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Non-pharmacological measures given to patients with asthma are using breathing exercises. One of the breathing exercises that can be done is pursed lip breathing. Pursed lip breathing is a breathing exercise that serves to reduce respiratory obstruction in asthma patients. Objective: Applied pursed lip breathing in bronchial asthma patients who have ineffective breathing pattern nursing problems. Methods: The research method used descriptive method, the data obtained by interview, observation, and documentation. Respondents in this study consisted of patients with a history of bronchial asthma. The patient's breathing pattern is measured by respiratory rate and oxygen saturation. Results: After used the pursed lip breathing technique for 3 days, the respiratory rate and oxygen saturation of the three respondents improved from an average respiratory rate of 30x/minute to 20x/minute and an average oxygen saturation of 95% to 98%. Recomendation: The application of the pursed lip breathing technique can be applied as a non pharmacological technique in asthmatic patients to reduce respiratory rate and increase oxygen saturation.
