Abstract

Background: Head injury is a mechanical trauma to the head that occurs directly or indirectly which can then result in impaired neurological function, physical function, cognitive, psychosocial, temporary or permanent. Head injury is one of the many causes of death. An estimated 1.7 million people in the United States suffer head injuries each year. More than 52,000 people died, 257,000 were hospitalized, and nearly 80% were treated and referred to the Emergency Department. The features of injuries that cause death are skull base fracture, diffuse brain injury, cerebral hematoma, and subdural hematoma (Awaloei, 2016). Objective: Explaining acute pain nursing care with guided imagery therapy in patients with mild head injury at the Emergency Installation of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This research uses case study method. The subjects of this study were 5 mild head injury patients with acute pain according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The five patients who got guided imagery therapy experienced a significant change in their pain intensity. The pain scale as measured by the NRS scale before treatment was on a scale of 6 (moderate pain) and after therapy was 3 (mild pain). Conclusion: Guided imagery therapy can reduce acute pain intensity in mild head injury patients. Recommendation: Nurses in hospital can apply guided imagery therapy to reduce acute pain intensity in mild head injury patients.
