Abstract

Background : Free radicals can be the cause of degenerative diseases. Antioxidants can inhibit free radicals. One source of natural antioxidants are Ganitri leaves (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) and Japanese papaya leaves (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius). Objectives : To determine the antioxidant activity of the combination of extracts of Ganitri leaves (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) and Japanese papaya leaves (Cnidoscolus acontifolius). Research Methods : Antioxidant activity test was carried out using the DPPH method. A combination of Japanese papaya leaves and ganitri leaf extract was made in comparisons (1:0), (0:1), (1:1), (1:2), and (2:1), single extract and vitamin C as a comparison made concentrations 2; 4; 6; 8 and 10 μg/mL absorbance was measured at a wavelength of 516.5 nm and then the IC50 value was calculated. Research Results : The IC50 value of vitamin C is 0.0075 μg/mL. The IC50 value obtained for a single extract of Japanese papaya leaves was 2657,125μg/mL, the IC50 value of a single extract of Ganitri leaves was 10.369 μg/mL, the IC50 value of the combined extract (1:1) was 29.8415 μg/mL, the IC50 value of the combined extract (1:2) was 12.2595 μg/mL, and the IC50 value of the combined extract (2:1) was 27.2921μg/mL. In conclusion : The combination of ganitri leaves extract and Japanese papaya leaves has very strong antioxidant activity. Recommendation : Further research is needed using other methods and toxicity tests are carried out.
