Abstract

Background: Based on the Republic of Indonesia Health Service (2019), the rate of neonatal jaundice is 51.47% and babies who died due to neonatal jaundice is 6.6%. The primary treatment of neonatal jaundice recommended by the government is to provide early breastfeeding or early breastfeeding, starting skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby to occur more quickly, early breastfeeding reduces serum bilirubin levels in infants and accelerates the expulsion of meconium in baby Objectives: To determine the relationship between early breastfeeding to prevent neonatal jaundice in newborns at the Petanahan Public Health Center. Method: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. The data obtained from observation and literature study. This research is a qualitative descriptive research with a case study approach. The research subjects were all babies who were born normally in October-November 2022 whose deliveries were assisted by midwives at the Petanahan Health Center. The total population in the last 1 month, namely 49 newborns, the researchers took a total sample of 41 respondents. Results: A number of 41 respondents studied, early breastfeeding given <10 times/24 hours, 14.6% of babies experienced neonatal jaundice and early breastfeeding given >10 times/24 hours, 85.3% of babies did not experience neonatal jaundice. The relationship between early breastfeeding in newborns to prevent neonatal jaundice in Petanahan Health Center (ρ=0.001<(α=0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between early breastfeeding in newborns to prevent neonatal jaundice.
