Abstract

Background: Breast cancer patients undergoing treatment will feel changes in the patient's physiological, psychological and social. This situation makes patients feel anxious about the treatment process which tends to have a negative impact on personality aspects such as self-concept and can affect relationships with other people, including family and partners. Objective: Find out the description of self-concept in caregivers and breast cancer patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Method: This research is a descriptive quantitative study with a cross sectional approach. The number of samples in this study were 64 caregivers and breast cancer patients, who were taken as samples by purposive sampling. The instrument used was a self-concept questionnaire with statistical tests using Descriptive Statistics Frequencies. Research results: The results of this study show that the average patient age is 49.31, the average caregiver age is 36.70, the patient's marital status is married (98.4%), the duration of chemotherapy is less than 1 year (79.7%) , no hereditary history (93.8%), the family who cares for the patient (67.2%), the average self-concept of breast cancer patients is 44.48, which is medium, and the average self-concept of caregivers of breast cancer patients is 49.97 namely high. Conclusion: In this study it was found that the caregiver's self-concept and the self-concept of cancer patients greatly influence the recovery of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
